The Romantics’ preoccupation with poetry reveals itself in the Eichendorff settings of solo lieder and duets of Felix Mendelssohn interspersed with the indelible Lieder ohne Worte, Book 3, Op. 28. The String Quintet No. 1 in A Major, a gem from the composer’s youth, captures the character of Baroque counterpoint and Classical forms put under the spell of an elfin world.
